Apple Devs Ditch The Watch, Embrace The TV

New data out this week has revealed that Apple AAPL -0.71%’s much-vaunted Watch is struggling to retain the interest of the usually fervent Apple developer community – a situation which could, of course, ultimately lead to consumers losing interest in it too. But the news isn’t all bad for Apple, as the data also finds that developers appear to be showing renewed interest in Apple’s iOS and tvOS platforms.

The news comes from Realm: a mobile database with more than 100,000 developers on its books with a claimed app reach of around one billion users worldwide. Those are some pretty big numbers, so it has to be alarming for Apple to hear from Realm that after an initial burst of developer activity following the 2014 launch of the original WatchKit developer tools, interest in creating new apps for the Watch has plummeted.

The situation has got so bad that according to Realm’s Vice President Tim Anglade (himself an app developer) in an interview reported by Business Insider, for every thousand apps now being developed for iOS, 10 are developed for tvOS but barely one is developed for the Watch. Ouch.
