The TSA Paid $1.4 Million For An iPad App That Only Points Left Or Right
If you've ever used the Transport Security Administration's (TSA) pre-check service, then you've probably seen an agent with an iPad that randomly decides whether or not you're going to be searched. They use an app that randomly points left or right for each passenger, indicating which line you'll be assigned to.
When I first started learning code at age 16, the first thing we created was a program that randomly selected one of two values. So you'd probably figure that the program the TSA use was pretty cheap, right? Wrong! It cost $1.4 million. No, it doesn't stop terrorists, it literally only chooses left or right.
